About the small things in life that seem oh so big

Puzzle of Logic

Posted in Expat Talks by Cheryl on 7 September 2005

When I begin to think about it, moving to a foreign country is like solving one of those word puzzles I used to do for homework in the sixth grade. There are all kinds of things that must be done, and each is dependent on another. So, I’m going to give you the to-do list and you see what order everything has to go in:

  1. Open a local bank account. (You need a tax ID number.)
  2. Hang up the lamps and put the new furniture together. (You need to buy the furniture and the ladder.)
  3. Arrange DSL Internet access. (You need a telephone number.)
  4. Get a telephone line. (You need a local bank account and an apartment.)
  5. Buy furniture and ladder. (You must do this locally - cannot be done in advance. And you need an apartment for delivery of the furniture.)
  6. Get an apartment. (You need the contract and employment.)
  7. Get a tax ID number. (You can’t do this until you are relocating.)
  8. Arrange house insurance. (You need a local bank account.)

Does Canada count? Because it’s across a river from me now!

I’ll have to read backwards, it appears that I’ve missed a lot.
