Ever fine-tune your own grave?

Posted in Short & Sweet by Cheryl on 17 January 2006

Maybe it takes a special kind of person, but in any case I have a special knack for fine-tuning myself into very deep holes. Just when I’ve got a project almost done, I begin to look for areas to fine-tune. Now, knowing myself, that’s when the alarm lights should go off in my head, but hey, I’m young and brilliant… just a little tweak there, a fine-tune there and… nooooooooOO! My website that used to work in Internet Explorer and Mozilla now looks like a kindergartener’s drawing in Mozilla!!!! booo-hoooooooOOOOOO Last night I worked 6 hours straight to fix what I did in 45 minutes! Now’s that’s an accomplishment… or something.

Well, I think I’ve learned my lesson… wonder how long it’ll stick with me! Any experiences of your own to share?

I often encounter this level of nitpickiness when I’m cleaning. If I would just vacuum, dust, mop, wipe and wash, everything would look very nice and I would be done. It’s when I lean down and notice the smudges around the baseboards that the minutia (sp?) takes over. Now there is nothing wrong with a good thurough cleaning now and then, but when you find yourself scrubbing the grout with a q-tip instead of cleaning the rest of the house-it’s time to take a chocolate break. =)

Ohhh yea, that kind of thing happens to me wayyy too often, it’s almost like it’s my hobby.
But closest to your story was when my client (who was testing the website in IE7 BETA!) was complaining about strange layout issues, so I discovered more and more and more flaws in IE’s support of the web ’standards’… and I thought I knew most of ‘em after all the damn websites I’ve built.

Tip: never use the CSS2 properties: min-height / max-height etc.
