Paint dilemma’s

Posted in Short & Sweet by Cheryl on 17 December 2006

So, as I mentioned, we signed the papers for our new apartment on Friday! (Party!) One thing we noticed rather recently is that the last occupants must have been pretty heavy smokers because all the walls and especially the corners are a tobacco-brown shade (the walls are white..ish) So we thought, hmm, definitely going to have to paint pretty much the whole apartment.

A friend of ours recently had to paint his apartment when moving out (typical German-style rental agreement) and he said, never again, too much work, better pay to have it done. Well, tonight we got our first quote on the paint job for the new place - which includes the ceilings and covering up the creative red-and-white striped walls in 2 rooms - and it’s for EUR1000!!! So I’m beginning to think, hmm, going to paint it myself instead.

What do you guys think? Any tips on painting ceilings or covering smoke stains and candy-cane stripes?

I know there is special paint that you can use when covering up dark colors and painting light over them. I don’t remember what it’s called, but I’m sure you can google it. As long as the ceiling doesn’t have any weird textures, it should be easy to paint. Just get the right tools, (long paint pole, etc. ) If it’s just white on white mostly, it shouldn’t be too bad. Since you are buying the place, I would think about if you want actually colors on the walls. Now’s the time to do it =)

Painting walls isn’t too bad if:
    1. You know what color you want.
    2. You have the tools — enough brushes, rollers, rolling pans, TARPS.
    3. You put on the music.

Painting ceilings is a pain in the neck, especially if you have any arthritis there.

I would assume it takes two coats. Once with very good paint over a very similar color, only lighter, in a not-too-well-lighted room, we got by with one coat.
