The Aftermath

This picture doesn’t do the chaos in our house yesterday justice. The place was so crowded and disorganized that you could barely get anywhere; the word “walk” didn’t apply - try “climb”, “crawl”, or “jump”. But wait, I’m getting ahead of myself…
Old vs New
We moved from a 100 sq. meter apartment on the 3rd floor of a building in the center of Aschaffenburg to an 85 sq. meter apartment on the 1st floor of a building just outside the city center. The new apartment has as advantages easy access by car, a balcony, more cozy floor plan, and fewer stairs to climb, not to mention that we no longer live above a cosmetics store (which is nice since we ended up paying lots of their heating costs and the employees always smoked in the hallway). The primary disadvantage of the new apartment is that it remains smaller than the old one, which contributed greatly to the chaos since most rooms could not be organized in the same manner as they were at the previous apartment.
D-Day
We contracted a company to do the move, primarily because we now have more than 9 furniture items that measure over 2 meter long and weigh too much for us to carry (including 5 heavy clothes shelving units), and carrying those things down 3 flights of twisted stairs and back up 1 flight is likely to incur casualties. The company used a lift to do all the moving, at the old and at the new house. This did cause me some proverbial gray hairs, as the lift broke first thing (after 1 load) and it took over 30 minutes to fix it. Then at the new house the braking system wasn’t adjusted properly, and at the top the lift would jerk to a stop, sending the things on it tumbling… this included a hair-raising tumble of our LCD television that luckily didn’t break it. (They did fix the braking system and the rest went much better!)
The Aftermath
We stayed up until 1am the first night (Friday), just getting the bedroom semi-organized and the bed assembled so we could sleep. Yesterday we managed to get enough things unpacked that we can now walk freely through the house and find food/drink without too much effort. Today we hope to get the place “livable” for this week, particularly since I work at home and work starts tomorrow again.
Wish us luck!

p.s.
Did I mention we don’t yet have a kitchen? (You may have noticed in the pictures.) It arrives on Valentine’s Day. Until then ..
