About the small things in life that seem oh so big

We have lift-off

Posted in Storytelling by Cheryl on 16 February 2007

The kitchen is installed and working! Amazing the things you can take for granted until you don’t have them for 3 weeks, and then they suddenly return, even better than they were before.

Kitchen from front

The second and third doors down on the left are the freezer and the refrigerator, respectively. Behind the left door under the sink are pull-out trash bins, and behind the door to the right of that is the dishwasher.

Kitchen long-ways Here’s a view from the kitchen door into the kitchen towards the balcony. We still have to hang a curtain on the door leading to the balcony.

Kitchen work area The work area, pictured to the right, is my favorite: plenty of nice lighting and a fancy-pantsy cutting board that fits over the sink area (either left or right or anywhere in between) to give us more workspace on that side of the kitchen. When the cutting board is in the way, I just put it on the bar-side of the kitchen. The other cool thing about the sink is that you can move the drain up and down using the knob on the front left; no need to stick your hand into the dirty dishwater to drain the sink!

First kitchen impression on entering the house I took the top picture from the livingroom side of the bar; here’s a view from the entry hallway of our house through the kitchen into the livingroom. The lighting we hung up above the bar doesn’t work (!) so we took it down again and have to exchange it.

This side of the kitchen is around 2.3 meters long. You can see the roll-out cupboard drawers a bit in the picture; all the rest of the cabinets on this side have normal doors - cheaper!

You can see a bit on the left side of this picture that we have a few small shelves at eye-height. It’s a perfect place for us to put the water boiler, espresso machine, etc. - keeps the bar from getting cluttered.

In-cabinet lighting Last but not least, I have to mention one of Tim’s special contributions to this kitchen: the in-cabinet lighting. The translucent cupboards above the sink not only have lights under them but also in them… let’s all say “ooo” together :) We leave them on in the evening when all the other kitchen lights are out, makes it easy to get a glass of water without turning on the ceiling light.

Bar floor-to-ceiling p.s. One more picture, of the bar side floor-to-ceiling. I haven’t mentioned to you the various “challenges” the installer ran into during installation… one of them was that the silver board along the bottom of the bar was designed to be more recessed, similar to the rest of the kitchen. But it turned out that would make part of the kitchen tiles visible from the livingroom! (Details, details) In the end we recessed it just a little over a centimeter, no tiles to be seen :D

Check out Tim’s blog for other photos and photos taken during the installation.

Nice job with the kitchen!!! These pics look better than looking through your webcam. Looks amazing. The in-cabinet lighting and the bar (both Tim’s picks) are two of my favorites too. :)

There aren’t 3 doors on the fridge, Eric :P Behind the top door, there’s a cabinet (we put the cereal there). Behind the door under that, there’s the freezer. And behind the big door under that is the fridge! And off the picture, under the fridge, there’s another door and that’s a drawer that pulls out (storage). Impressed? hehe
