First impressions, PS3

Posted in Storytelling by Cheryl on 30 September 2007

Tim came home with a PS3 (PlayStation 3) this weekend. It took us a little while to figure out where to put it since it is aesthetically equivalent to a 12 x 5 x 9 inch black box - read, not that easy to hide in what we otherwise would consider our aesthetically pleasing living room. We connected the box via a high-definition cable to the TV and via an optical sound cable to the sound system (and of course remembered to plug it into the power outlet as well). Then, full of anticipation, we turned it on.

On starting it up for the first time, we got a black screen with the following question printed in white text on it:

“An available HDMI device was detected. Do you want to output video and audio using HDMI?
Yes     No”

Hmm. With my substantial background in math and logica, I was able to figure out that our answer should be No, since we only want to use HDMI for the video. Tim picked No, and the screen went blank. Obviously, the programmers at Sony never completed their courses in math and logica. I felt like the guy in Monty Python and the Holy Grail who gets tossed into the ravine after answering the “What is your favorite colour?” question incorrectly.

Luckily, Sony doesn’t come up with too many original things (they copied the motion sensor in their controller off of the Nintendo Wii controller), and they obviously learned from Microsoft that a reboot should fix most problems. We rebooted the PS3 and got the same question again. This time we picked Yes and the Sony programmers granted us our wish to continue setup.

I won’t bore you with the details of the rest - it would bore me just to write it all - but I will conclude by saying that the only thing impressive about the PS3 is the DTS sound, which can really make things come alive compared to stereo sound. For the rest, there were plenty of other little details just like the startup screen that were less than impressive - just more reasons to crack on this over-priced black box that has now invaded my living room.

that PoS3 sounds like crap. it looked great in the store tho. WII Rocks! (until you accidentally whack your significant others controller crushing their finger causing instant relationship conflict while swinging a viscious backhand with topspin to win the point, only to lose the game, and the fight.)

we don’t wii much anymore. some whoopy if i grovel.

Libby came home from work with an Xbox (original, not 360) last week and I was on cloud nine. A co-worker had just bought a PS3 (already owning the 360) and felt pity on us for not owning a single gaming system.

I know how much better the newer models are, but I’m just about as content as can be. I’ll wait till the price drops until I upgrade.

    I’m still envious though…

O dear, i do hope he warned you before he bought it. well you can always put it on the left side of the TV stand between the wal and the stand that way you might not see it you could also paint it white that way it fits your room better. i tought the 360 was bulky but the ps3 beat them all. well you can always sell it. ^.-
