About the small things in life that seem oh so big

Sweating it to class

Posted in Storytelling by Cheryl on 8 October 2007

There’s nothing like biking across town and up a huge hill in order to get to my bi-weekly German class on time to bring out the youth in me. Though, given the huffing and puffing that accompanied the trek up the hill, the amount of youth I demonstrated is perhaps questionable. If nothing else, I should at least improve in biking up hills in addition to learning some German, given that this course is 2 semesters long and runs until May next year.

I came 100% equipped for learning tonight, having stocked up on the necessary supplies this week at the supermarket. In my childish red backpack, I brought my thick purple notebook with four different sections, each section edged in a different pastel color. I also brought my new vocabulary notebook with 2 columns on each page to give one the illusion that learning vocabulary is fun and exciting. Then I had one blue, one black, and one red pen in a Nintendo Wii pen case, and a separate set of 4 highlighters in different colors in their own plastic case. My Dutch “Learning German” grammar book, my pocket Dutch-German dictionary, and my big thick German Dictionary for Foreigners were also present and accounted for.

I’m not really good enough to be in this class but I think I will catch up no problem, though that will require me to do a bit more than just attend the class, sigh. What’s funny is, regardless of the fact that I haven’t learned hardly anything yet, my reckless (read: uninhibited, probably incorrect) use of the German language in everyday situations has gone up at least 2 notches, score one for unjustified self-confidence.

Being a student is something that I find relaxing. There are so many small milestones, little assignments, and things that I can see improving that learning is just one big feel-good session. Well, that’s the idea in any case - I haven’t tried the homework we got tonight but I think it is a bit beyond me…

I’ve been asking myself the hypothetical question: if I were to take another course on any subject after this one, what subject/skill would I choose?

I hear you about the whole ‘being a student is relaxing’. I’m sure other people think we’re crazy, but there is something to be said about small milestones, doing your work and not having to worry about being fired. Plus you get a SYLLABUS!!! I wish real jobs gave me a syllabus. That would be awesome.

I can say ” I love bacon” in German! woohoo! I can’t spell it, but I can say it.
